University Of Bahr el Ghazal

INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Based on the general policy of the national Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the University of Bahr el-Ghazal in the context of teaching, research and community development; the curriculum of Bachelor of Science honours (BSc Hon) was developed.

As food and water safety, zoonotic diseases become a great public health concern mainly because of the changing global patterns of food production, increased movement of people, increased consumer awareness of food hygiene and safety issues, stringent standards in international trade and technological advancement; it has been observed that a training Programme be developed to train cadres of professionals with wider skills, knowledge and attitudes in handling public and environmental health issues.

Overview

South Sudan is a vast country bordering six African countries and is a home to more than fifty ethnic groups with diverse cultures and traditions. The inter-cultural and economic interactions between these ethnic groups and others in the neighbouring countries; in addition to the long civil wars, contributed greatly to the deterioration of public and environmental health, weakened the health system reflected in severe shortage of health personnel and poorly functioning of health facilities especially in greater Bahr el-Ghazal states.

This created a challenging situation in terms of health and environmental management which necessitated the establishment of an institution that will contribute to the management of community’s and individuals’ needs for healthy environments in Bahr el-Ghazal states and the country at large.

The Institute of Public and Environmental Health (IPEH) was established by a Presidential decree in the year 2002 as Diploma programme at the university and became operational in 2003 in Wau Town. Since its establishment, it has graduated over ten (10) batches of students with intermediate Diplomas in Public and Environmental Health.

Justification

There is great need for services and professionalism in public and environmental health in South Sudan in general and greater Bahr el-Ghazal states in particular.
